One of the most exciting trends in our industry is the growing recognition of the importance of the working environment when it comes to attracting and retaining staff.
Gone are the days of pokey cubicles, grey partition walls and lifeless kitchens. Today’s employees expect a comfortable workspace that makes them feel welcome and valued.
Increasingly, employers are seeing the workspace as a real activator of company culture and bottom-line performance. This is driving a period of rapid growth in our business as we find more opportunities to provide personalised spaces for clients.
In this Cachet Collective you’ll see an example of how we improved the way staff connect and interact at LinkedIn’s Sydney office.

project spotlight: LINKEDIN
LinkedIn became a household name by connecting the world’s professionals. So naturally when they engaged Cachet to refresh their Sydney office, they were keen to improve the way their staff interacted with each other.
With a previous layout that impeded access to staff and offered poor natural light, opening things up was a priority with our design. We also wanted to reinvigorate the under-utilised collaboration spaces in a way that suits different styles of working.
We worked closely with LinkedIn to understand the way they work, adapting our design to meet their immediate needs while allowing for future growth.
LinkedIn wanted their office to reflect its Sydney location. So we commissioned a local artist to create graphics throughout the workspace that identified iconic Sydney landmarks and incorporated LinkedIn’s culture and values.
By using custom joinery and plants to zone workspaces, we introduced elements of privacy – making collaboration spaces more functional while creating a homely and comfortable feel.

What do you love most about working in HR?
I cut my teeth working in hospitality management and realised pretty quickly it was the people aspect of business I loved the most. Working in the HR space provides the opportunity to really make a difference in peoples’ lives. It might be extracting what someone really wants to do in their career, giving someone the courage to apply for a role they think is beyond them, or letting someone know what their rights are and advocating for them. I love making a difference to the business too. Ensuring the right role and organisational fit when recruiting and striving towards a high engagement culture contributes to organisational success and as such positively impacts the Client experience as well. It is the best of both worlds.
How has Cachet’s people mix changed since you started?
I’ve been at Cachet for 15 months and the business has evolved quite a bit. Our strategy is to hand-pick specialists in each discipline. That provides a solid layer of expertise and leadership to instil best practice across the business. The great thing about Cachet is that we’re clear on the culture we want to achieve – we’re a true family and we genuinely care about each other and the work we do.
What types of people do you look for?
One of the most important traits for us is agility. We have multiple studios that work closely together as one team, so you need to be able to float successfully across different time zones, locations and projects. We also look for people who have a positive mindset and the resilience to manage the challenges of deadline-driven work. Oh, and you need to be able to have a laugh!
Who are the hardest people to find in your industry?
We’re always on the lookout for project managers who want to work side-by-side with designers and be part of the creative process. Cachet is unique in that we offer complete design and delivery services to our Clients, so it’s extremely important we find the right people to participate in the end to end project process as our business continues to grow.
What do you think is the key to building a great culture?
Being very clear on your aspiration and never losing sight of that. It’s a noisy world with a lot of distractions, so you need to have conviction in where you’re headed and be passionate about your end goal. And you need a great workspace of course!
If you weren’t in this job what would you be doing?
I’d love to be running a charity; I’ve seen first-hand how just a little bit of help and support can go a long way to empowering people to turn things around.
